“Another Saturday” – Stuart Murdoch
(Words/music: Stuart Murdoch, available on Dark Was the Night, 4AD 2009)
God Help the Girl was Stuart Murdoch’s main project in 2009, and it was a charming collection of pop songs one might expect from the Belle and Sebastian songwriter. However, it was Murdoch’s contribution to the Dark Was the Night charity compilation that stuck with me throughout the year. While the God Help the Girl songs were fuller and catchier, the simple folk melody in “Another Saturday” became my de-facto whistling tune for a few weeks last summer.
While not as robust as the recent Belle and Sebastian output (nor as deliberately playful as their late ‘90s output), “Another Saturday” shares many of the same strengths – Murdoch’s distinctive voice, counter-melodies, and a light touch. Still, it has more of a folk feel than Belle and Sebastian’s carefully crafted pop, specifically in the way that Murdoch weaves the melody in and out, letting (his own) backing vocals float in and out gently. Even if it’s not of the same vintage as If You’re Feeling Sinister, “Another Saturday” is far from the typical charity album castoff. If nothing else, I’d be curious what an entire solo album of Murdoch’s folkier side might sound like.
